About Pittsburgh

Get to know the city hosting this year’s APTA Conference

Pittsburgh is known as the “Steel City” due to its long and storied history in steel production. The city was founded by General John Forbes in 1758, and it quickly grew into an industrial powerhouse because of Andrew Carnegie’s steel mills during the late 19th century. This period saw a large influx of immigrants from Europe who came looking for work and helped shape Pittsburgh into what it is today – one of America's most livable cities according to numerous studies.

Overtime, after the closure of the steel mills, Pittsburgh grew into a vibrant city. Surrounded by rivers and parks, the city offers unique terrain and countless places to explore. The industries in Pittsburgh, particularly transportation, education and medicine, continue to transform the region. Pittsburgh’s rich culture and surprising experiences draw thousands of visitors each year.

We hope that your stay here will be unforgettable. Don't forget to explore all that Pittsburgh has to offer both inside and outside the conference walls. Learn more about Pittsburgh here: https://www.visitpittsburgh.com/
