A popular tourist attraction, the Monongahela Incline is the oldest funicular in operation in the United States.

Monongahela Incline Tour

The two-car, track operated people mover originally opened for service in 1870 to ferry passengers and freight from Mt. Washington to Carson Street and Downtown Pittsburgh below. Originally steam driven and improved over the years, the incline now features a state-of-the-art operating system. Tourists and commuters alike experience this six-minute ride seven days a week, 365 days a year.

Take a ride back in time and view transit history along Pittsburgh's Carson Street, West Busway, and at the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum.

PRT Legacy & Pennsylvania Trolley Museum Tour

The Duquesne Incline was built and opened in 1877 and owned by Pittsburgh Regional Transit. Following, the tour travels the five-mile PRT West Busway, opened in 2000. Originally constructed as a “rapid rail bypass” by the Pennsylvania Railroad in the late 1800’s for local commuter and national intercity passenger trains, the rail right-of-way was purchased and repurposed into a rapid bus transit corridor.

PRT is excited to invite you on a guided tour of the South Hills Village Rail Center.

Technical Rail Tour

During the 45-minute light rail trip to the facility, we will discuss our LRT system, fleet status, and maintenance practices. While at the facility, we will tour the Rail Traffic Operations Center (RTO) and Maintenance Facility (Carhouse). In the recently updated Carhouse, you will have an opportunity to tour Heavy Repair Maintenance, Wheel Truing, Pantograph Repair, Body Shop, Paint Booths, Blowdown Booths that will be under construction, HVAC Running Repair Maintenance, and Daily Servicing. We will have vehicles to examine both undercar equipment and roof mounted equipment, as well as highly trained maintenance staff for related questions.
