PRT Legacy & Pennsylvania Trolley Museum Tour

Take a ride back in time and view transit history along Pittsburgh's Carson Street, West Busway, and at the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum.

The Duquesne Incline was built and opened in 1877 and owned by Pittsburgh Regional Transit.  Following, the tour travels the five-mile PRT West Busway, opened in 2000.  Originally constructed as a “rapid rail bypass” by the Pennsylvania Railroad in the late 1800’s for local commuter and national intercity passenger trains, the rail right-of-way was purchased and repurposed into a rapid bus transit corridor.

The interactive Trolley Museum features historic trolleys from around the world and captures pieces of time from Pennsylvania's early days of city transportation, including a late 1800's piece from Pittsburgh's past. Your visit includes a four-mile scenic trolley ride, guided tour, exhibits, and short film.

Each tour time of the PRT Legacy & Pennsylvania Trolley Museum Tour can accommodate 100 participants. Tours last four hours and include a snack. Tour times are listed below.

  • Sunday, June 11:
    • 8:30 a.m. & 12:30 p.m.
  • Monday, June 12:
    • 2:30 p.m.
  • Tuesday, June 13:
    • 2:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday, June 14:
    • 12:30 p.m. & 2:30 p.m.

The tour group will meet at the PRT registration area on the third floor of the Convention Center. Please arrive 10-15 minutes before the posted tour time.

Your tour group will then take a 40-minute bus ride to the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum, passing by the Duquesne Incline and on PRT's west busway. At the museum, you will be able to explore the 50 historic trolley cars, including a 1905 Jersey Shore wooden car, an 1870s Pittsburgh trolley and an open air trolley car from Rio de Janeiro. After touring the museum's collection, you'll hop on board a trolley and ride around the rails, where you will find small-town scenes in a rural western Pennsylvania setting.

Wheelchair accessibility is available on all PRT vehicles and when touring the museum. Some historic trolleys are not accessible.
