During your visit to Pittsburgh, one of the must-see neighborhoods is Mt. Washington. From green spaces and neighborhood bars to gourmet dining and a wide variety of shops, Pittsburgh’s most photogenic neighborhood has something for everyone.
Getting There
Few cities in America feature inclines, and none are as historic as the Mononghela or Duquesne Incline.
The Monongahela Incline, operated by Pittsburgh Regional Transit, travels between Station Square (lower station) and Grandview Avenue (upper station) at the intersection with Shiloh Street where a variety of restaurants and bars are located.
Directions to the Monongahela Incline
At the convention center, take PRT’s light rail service at Wood Street Station and ride to Station Square. Exit the vehicle and continue past the entrance to the transit tunnel along Carson Street. The lower station of the Monongahela Incline is just a short walk after that. The Monongahela Incline will rake you right up to Mt. Washington.
The Duquesne Incline is located farther west off Carson Street. The Duquesne Incline also climbs to Mt. Washington to Grandview Avenue a few blocks from a handful of fine dining restaurants.
History
Mt. Washington’s now iconic view offered a strategic vantage point for early settlers during battles to control the region. The discovery of coal in its hillside ignited Pittsburgh’s industrial boom, and the rapid expansion of the mining industry made the neighborhood an excellent spot for employment. Over time, the influx of workers became so great that housing began to open on top of Mt. Washington and the inclines were designed for transportation. The neighborhood was named in honor of President Washington. Most of the industry Mt. Washington was known for is now gone, but the neighborhood is a popular residential spot and a must-see for visitors.
